Racking safety basics
ARE LOCKING PINS NEEDED ON RACKING?
Yes. Racking safety locks — often called locking pins, beam locks or safety clips — are a small but essential part of adjustable pallet racking. They help keep beams engaged with uprights and reduce the chance of a beam being accidentally dislodged.
What is a racking safety lock or locking pin?
On adjustable pallet racking, each beam end has a connector that hooks or clips into the upright frame. A safety lock — sometimes called a locking pin, beam lock or safety clip — is a small metal clip or pin fitted at that connection. Its job is to stop the beam from lifting off or sliding out of the upright if it is caught by a forklift truck, pallet edge or shifting load.
Different manufacturers use different lock designs: spring clips, pins, latches and retaining bars are all common. Because the designs vary, a lock from one system will not necessarily fit another. That is why identifying the manufacturer and beam profile is the first step when you need replacements.
Why missing or damaged locks matter
A beam without a working safety lock can potentially be knocked off its connection point. That is a real safety risk: a dislodged beam can drop its load, destabilise the bay, or lead to a partial collapse. The beam may still look seated when the rack is empty, but the connection can separate under impact or vibration during normal warehouse operations.
For that reason, missing, bent, corroded or incorrectly fitted locks are treated as a genuine fault during a racking inspection. Components with damaged locks should not go back into service until the correct locks are replaced.
Checking locks on used racking
When buying or reinstalling used pallet racking, checking the safety locks should be a standard part of your condition assessment. Look at every beam-end connector and confirm:
- The lock is present and matches the manufacturer's design.
- The clip or pin is not bent, cracked, corroded or loose.
- It is fitted correctly and can be engaged and released as intended.
- Any missing locks are replaced with the correct type before loading.
This check is also a genuine part of what is assessed during a racking inspection. If you want more detail on formal inspection requirements, racksafetyinspections.co.uk covers the standards and frequency of warehouse racking inspections.
What to do if locks are missing
Do not load a bay until every beam has a working safety lock. Source the correct replacements from the original manufacturer or a compatible supplier, and have the installation checked by a competent person. If you are unsure which system you have, send Rackstor clear photographs of the upright profile, beam connector and the lock location — we can help identify the system and discuss sourcing compatible components where available.
Common questions
Are locking pins needed on pallet racking?▼
Yes. Safety locks — also called locking pins, beam locks or safety clips — are needed on adjustable pallet racking. They prevent a beam from being accidentally lifted or knocked off its upright connector.
What does a racking safety lock actually do?▼
A safety lock is a small clip or pin fitted at the beam-end connector. It acts as a retention device, stopping the beam from disengaging from the upright if it is caught by a forklift, pallet or load movement. It is not the main load-bearing part, but it is a genuine safety-critical detail.
Can used pallet racking be used without safety locks?▼
No. A beam without a working safety lock should not be loaded. The connection may look secure, but it can separate under impact. Missing or damaged locks are a reason to take components out of service until correct replacements are fitted.
What should I do if locks are missing on second-hand racking?▼
Check every beam-end connector, identify the manufacturer and lock type, and source the correct replacement locks. Have the installation inspected by a competent person before loading. Checking and replacing missing locks is a standard part of getting used racking inspection-ready.
